Read all about it!

We have been using our knowledge about the Pompeii disaster to write newspaper reports. We have had to be objective and write in a serious, formal style. We used reported speech and powerful vocabulary to add drama to the story and engage our readers.

Here are some of our favourite extracts. What do you think?

  1. Yesterday afternoon disaster struck Pompeii. ALL of the villagers died, the people who lived close could see the people of Pompeii running away. People were destroyed. First there was a slight rumbling of the earth but the people were used to that so they just carried on with their normal lives.

  2. The eruption petrified most of the citizens and guilt was the only thought on their minds. The unlucky towns people were frozen in time, most of these beings went to get their belongings after the fifth wave, but didn't make it past the sixth wave.

  3. Few made it out alive, for people went back to collect their belongings. Pliny the younger tried to warn them, but it was too late. Pliny the younger has only one regret, that is why, they were living amongst the devastating volcano. He believes that the beast will awake again, but until then it rests in peace, among mother nature. But magnificent land will fill with life yet again.

  4. Tragedy was caused by Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. Most people in the loved city thought it was normal because tremors and rumbles happen every twelve months.

There was an eye witness called Pliny the younger who said that "I am so happy that the volcano is dormant, but I felt that he was perishing the world and the world with me." He thought that innocent people lost their precious lives and everything that they ever loved.

  5. No lava came out the top of the "guardian." Ash, debris and molten rock soared 12 to 14 km high. The North side of the huge mountain shattered and caused a volcanic cloud. The beautiful city of Pompeii was no more than 6 meters of ash. 2 thousand citizens lives were lost in mere darkness. The tragedy of the eruption started at 1 PM . Pompeii and Herculaneum were the 2 main victims. Herculaneum is closer to mount Vesuvius. People in Pompeii were protected by its town walls until the 8th pyroclastic current when it surged through the town and killed every one in its path.

  9. The first warning was a rumbling earthquake but everyone thought it was a regular day when an earthquake hits Pompeii and Herculaneum. Soon after black and grey ash coved the volcano, Mount Vesuvius.
At around noon mount Vesuvius erupted with a crash and a boom. Everyone was running like mad and didn't know what to do next.

  10. The first warning signs were an earthquake that made Pompeii and Herculania
rumble. The citizens went on with their day to day lives. When what they thought was a peaceful mountain that protected them turned out to be a monstrous volcano. MOUNT VESUVIUS!!

  11. The Daily Chaos

Yesterday, destruction struck Pompeii after the volcano; their protector Mt Vesuvius, let out an all mighty roar which killed a total of 2000 citizens of the city.

This all started on their normal Tuesday. It was the 24 August 79AD. The citizens were working hard when the ground started to shake and the earth began to tremor, but because it has happened before, they didn't make a big deal of it. Then it began their powerful guardian erupted. Pots smashed and cutlery fell, the clouds turned black and rained ashes upon them and shot super heated pyroclastic currants through the city, killing their population. Many died and some survived. After it was done, the survivors went back for their valuables but the next current came and wiped them out and the ash rained covering the once peaceful town from existence leaving only rubble and ruins.

  12. Yesterday a very dramatic eruption happened in Pompeii at midday, when Pompeii's so called protector called Mount Vesuvius erupted killing thousands of people. The sign began at midday when everyone was having their lunch and some were sleeping. Then a tower of grey and black smoke raised from the top of the volcano changing the clouds.

  15. Today disaster struck Pompeii with ash falling down from the pitch black sky.
Many screams have come upon us as our beloved Pompeii is buried in a layer of
molten rock and ash. It has reduced Pompeii to a population of zero percent.
There are no remains. I hope in the future people discover this amazing city.

  19. Then at noon the volcano erupted sending ash and debris into the air; to be exact 1.5 million tons every second. Every one stared at the amazing spectacle of dancing fire, flickering in the moon lit air. But then day became night; the sky was as black as coal; covering the sky. The people of Pompeii thought it was a starless night, which brought DOOM TO ALL!...
