Non-chronological Reports

Y5 worked collaboratively in groups to write non-chronological reports on different animals. Have the children...
      • used formal language?
      • written in the third person?
      • written in the present tense?
      • used sub-headings?
      • stuck to the facts?

  1. Bats: nocturnal nightmares?

Bats: nocturnal nightmares or misunderstood creatures of the night?

They normally live in dark places such as caves, trees and roosts. Bats have sharp teeth as they are omnivores. Fruit bats only eat fruit and vegetables however other kinds of bats eat meat and leaves. In all of the UK, bats eat insects and bugs. The bats come in a vast range of sizes; they possess large ears that allow them to detect prey and predators. Bats also have black leathery wings to help them fly at high speeds.

Bats’ Habitats: Spooky Caves or Bright Woods?

Most bats in the UK evolved to live in trees and caves , but many have now adapted to roosts in buildings including: barns, houses, tunnels and bridges. Roosts are homes for bats {like nests}.In summer female bats form maternity roosts. All UK bats eat insects, so they need to find roosts near good forgoing habitats such as: pastune, woodland or water. Some bats prefer water ways, others prefer woods or grassland. Bats roosts are protected by the law. Also bats change roosts depending on the time of the year. In winter they use roosts to hibernate throughout the season

Appearance: spooky shadows or cute creatures?

The appearance of a bat would usually be described as scary but if you were to search bats on the internet most people would refer to them as ‘cute’. Bats are usually brown, red, tan, grey or black coloured. They come in a vast range of sizes from 21/2 to 7 inches long. A bat’s wingspan ranges from 8 to 23 inches. They possess large ears that allow them to easily detect prey and predators. Bats have sharp teeth (as they are omnivores) and have leathery wings to help them fly at high speeds. Some bats can be as small as a bumble bee or as big as a small dog.

    Species: how many are there?

There are lots of different species and lots of different names.
The fruit bat falls into the category of the megabat. There are many
species of bats: Egyptian fruit bat, fruit bat, giant golden-crowned flying fox, Indian bat, Bumblebee bat and little brown bat. They make up approximately 20% of all mammals in the world. However there are more than 1,200 bats species in the whole world. There are more bats then you think. Bats otherwise called flying foxes are mammals.

    Are bats nocturnal nightmares?

Bats have long, black, leathery wings which helps them to soar at high speeds. Most UK bats have evolved to live in trees and caves, but now they are starting to adapt to roosts in buildings. Bats are a range of sizes, weights and different colours, all bats have a different appearance. There are lots of different species of bats. What do you think; are bats nocturnal nightmares?

  2. Wild cats: do you know what they are?

Wild cats can be dangerous. They eat zebras and other animals, because wild cats are carnivores. Wild cats live in rain forests, jungles and all sorts of hot places. Read paragraph two to find out their species. Or paragraph one to find out what wild cats eat.

    What do wild cats eat?

A lot of wild cats eat meat. They are called carnivores. Other cats eat other animals such as: zebras, sparrows, lizards, rats, antelopes etc. Many people fear wild cats because they are scared to be eaten, because humans have meat in them.

    The Wild Cat Family

Wild cats have a family, just like us humans; it is called “The Wild Cat family”. The wild cats from the wild cat family are one species. The following cats are wild cats: Panther, Puma, Cheetah, Cougar, Lion, Astatic Lion, Mountain Lion, Jaguar, Tiger, Leopard, Amur Leopard and Snow Leopard. There are many different species of wild cats, some are at the zoo and some are in the wild. Fact: Panthers are also known as Black Panthers. They are not a separate species, but rather a big cat with a gene that produces dark pigment.

    Closing Statement

Wild Cats can be stripy and can camouflage. They are in a variety of colours. A lot of wild cats eat meat and they are carnivores. All wild cats have whiskers. Some wild cats can live in the artic like snow leopards.

  3. What are Monkeys?

Monkeys are types of unique animals. They love bananas and leaves and sometimes can be found eating nuts. They live in trees and cages, which can make them restless and angry! Also they can be found in zoos. Did you know monkeys are very flexible? They swing from tree to tree and love to do tricks for their family and friends. They are very close to other kinds of species e.g. Mandrills, Blue Monkey, Spider Monkey and so many more.

    Species of a monkey

Did you know there are more than 260 monkey species in this world? These are some examples of monkeys: baboon, howler, spider, blue, Japanese macaque (also known as snow monkey) and mandrills. A mandrill looks like a baboon. It is a member of the old world monkeys.

Monkeys: What do they look like?

Monkeys come in different shapes and sizes. They are very furry animals. Most of them have long fur covered tails and hands with thumbs (just like humans).

    Where are monkeys’ habitats?

Most types of monkeys live in trees or sometimes cages if they were adopted or separated from their family. Did you know that a howler monkey can howl three miles away from their habitat? The monkeys that are nearly extinct are most likely to be in the zoo for their habitat so their species cannot be extinct.

    Monkeys Released

Vervet Monkeys are a known subspecies that have been identified; unfortunately they have been separated from other types of their species e.g. Baboon Monkeys, Gibbon Monkeys and Howler Monkeys. The world’s smallest monkey is the Pygmy Marmoset, which weighs just over 100g (3.50z). The Howler Monkey’s howl can be heard 3 miles away from its destination.

  5. Dolphins

Dolphins are very intelligent marine creautures. There are many different types of dolphins such as: bottle nose dolphin, pink dolphin, black dolphin and many more. Unfortunately some species of dolphin are endangered, but we are doing everything we can to help.

Do you know a dolphins diet?

A dolphin eats between 10g-25g of fish every day. Here are some types of fish they eat: herring, cod, mackerel and squid. Dolphins co-operate with each other to get food. Did you know killer whales are the largest member of the dolphin family and need a different diet? Blubber on a dolphin stores calories, which provides energy.

Do you know a dolphin’s appearance?

Dolphins have human like skin because it flakes and peels. Their skin is very smooth and rubbery. Full-grown male dolphins are slightly longer than full-grown female dolphins; male dolphins are also heavier than female dolphins. Teeth on a dolphin are used for grasping not chewing food and never can be replaced.

    Dolphins

Each type of dolphin is unique is its own way e.g. different diet, different appearance and habitats. Dolphins are fabulous to watch; they are fascinating. Will you consider helping an endangered dolphin?

  6. Sharks: Terrifying beasts or misunderstood fish?

    Sharks for starters

People may fear sharks but they are friendly on the inside. From 1580 to 2007 there were 64 reported Great White shark attacks. Sharks will only eat humans if they look like fish or if the shark is really hungry. Millions of sharks die caused by illegal ‘Shark Finning’ and that is unfair to almost harmless sharks.

    Feared species of sharks

In the world there are different types of shark such as: hammer head sharks, bull sharks, the great white shark and so on. There are more than 100 species of sharks. There is a shark that is called an angel shark. It is one of the most unusual sharks. Many people mistake them for some other types of sea creature. There is a shark that is called a bamboo shark; it was discovered in 2013. The smallest shark is called a puny; it is 7 inches long. Most sharks are about 40 feet long.

Sharks Habitat: What to know about them.

Tiger sharks, Hammerheads and Bull sharks prefer warmer waters, while the dogfish, Greenland and Goblin sharks opt for chiller waters. Great white sharks live in US coast, the golf coast, South America, Australia and Hawaii. A shark’s tail helps with the speed.

    Sharks: friendly or deadly?

Some sharks weigh 135 pounds maximum and are at least 5.8 metres long. They have 35,000 teeth. Shark skin is made out of dermal dentinal. The dorsal part of the body (top) is the darkest and although they are fish they have a different skeleton to fish.

    Summary of the sharks

People may think that sharks are scary but some are not. The smallest shark is about 20 metres long. Some sharks, for example the Great White shark and hammer head are 7 metres. Will you go diving with sharks?
